Alice de Saulles

I take photographs of the little things that interest me in this big, bizarre world. I want to have fun with my work and to provoke a reaction to keep photography alive and exciting.

My work concentrates on exploring the spaces around us and all the factors that work together to create and shape these environments, taking certain elements from it and allowing the viewer to experience them in a new way, whether it be about preservation or exploration.

All I want to say about myself is that my main motivation for doing art is for play. Making things and Art are my source of play and amusement. Life should be devoted to play and to play is my only life long intention. The rest does not matter.

I have been interested in Art from a young age and remember the excitement of taking my first ever photograph.

I started studying photography at A level in Preston where I became increasingly interested in the medium, then moved onto the BA Photography degree at MMU. I work mainly in portrait and fashion photography; however have explored alternative photography such as pinhole, which have influenced my practice.

Photographers such as Helmut Newton, Irving Penn and Henri Cartier-Bresson influence me. Also Artists and my surroundings have impacted my practice.

I would consider my work to be an eclectic mix of photographic genres.
I am inspired by colour and form as well as the cinematic.
I tend to shoot as I see, not as I imagine.

I am a photography degree student.
I document people and explore and record environments.
I am inspired by all kinds of subjects and themes.
I am continuously influenced by artists, new and old.
My photography is still rather raw and my mind very open.
I think I will be a student of this media for a long time, as I have found
photography to be a subject of unlimited possibilities and I am learning a lot.

I have always had a strong passion for Art and Design. Before studying on the Photography course at Manchester Metropolitan University, I studied Fine Art for over 4 years. This can very often be seen as a great influence throughout my practice as I still like to work with a variety of different materials. I love to experiment with textures and colours within my work often mixing Photography with Fine Art and Textiles.
